What to do with Metal in the Eye?

Unfortunately, something that is seen in the optometrist’s office not infrequently is metallic foreign bodies in the front of the eye. The small pieces of metal become embedded in the cornea due to grinding or cutting metal while not wearing safety glasses. These metal pieces are removable from the eye with a rotating burr while the eye is numbed. However, besides being unpleasant to have and to have removed, these foreign bodies leave scars in the cornea, the severity of which depends upon how deep they are embedded. These scars will at best cause glare and at worst cause permanent decreased visual acuity or blindness. This can all be avoided by simply wearing safety glasses to protect the eyes from flying debris. Safety glasses can even be made by your eye doctor with your eyeglass prescription in them.
