What to do with a Chemical Burn on the Eye!

Preparation is very important when faced with a chemical burn involving an eye.  An immediate appointment should be made with an eye care professional to assess any damage that may result.  The first step however should be continuous irrigation of the eye for at least 30 minutes.  Because chemical burns may be caused by acids, alkalis, mace or other eye irritants, sterile saline or eyewash is the best option for irrigation.  In a non clinical setting saline may not be available in which clean water is an alternate option.   Chemicals may cause extensive damage to ocular tissues in a very quick time frame emphasizing the the need for a quick reaction and treatment. If you are in doubt of what to do or if you cannot immediately see an eye care professional, you should seek immediate medical attention.
