Contact lenses and allergies

Contact Lenses and Allergies

Many patients come in this time of year complaining of contact lens intolerance.  Sensitivity to changes in the environment can cause inflammation and dryness of the eyes, but this doesn’t always mean you have to give up your contact lenses. For some patients, switching to a different cleaning solution can help rid the lens of irritating particles. Other patients may find relief by using prescription or over-the-counter allergy eye drops before or after lens wear. Daily disposable lenses can also provide increased comfort since they ensure a clean, fresh lens with each wear.

If you are having comfort or vision issues with your current lenses it is best to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor to see which of these solutions may work best for you.

Advantages of daily disposable contact lenses

Daily Disposable Contact Lenses

Daily disposable contacts are becoming increasingly popular because they are one of the healthiest options available to patients—and one of the most comfortable.

Healthier Eyes

Frequently replacing your daily contact lenses reduces the amount of time they spend in contact solution and reduces the chance of contamination from an old dirty contact lens case. This has been shown to reduce the rate of eye infections compared to other types of contacts.

Increased Comfort

It’s also more comfortable to start with clean contact lenses everyday. This is especially important with allergy sufferers, whose eyes tend to deposit more proteins and can be more reactive to allergens that remain with longer wear contacts.

Fortunately contact lens companies have been able to manufacture the lenses in a cost effective manner to help manage costs and keep increasing options available for daily disposable contact lenses. They’ve also developed a new, cost-effective daily disposable multifocal lens and expanded options with astigmatism patients with a new toric lens.

Watch for the Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis!!

Giant papillary conjunctivitis is a common condition in which large bumps form under an individuals eyelid.  It is an allergic response that is most common in soft contact lenses that have a longer planned replacement time frame.  The residual proteins on the lens incite the allergic reaction, which can lead to irritation and excess movement with contact lens wear.  The prevalence of GPC has decreased since disposable contact lenses have become popular.  In addition to prescribing medications and/or discontinuing contact lens wear an eye doctor may switch someone with mild to moderate GPC to daily disposable contact lenses as a viable option.
