What’s all this I hear about blue light?

Blue light UV-C

Blue light is in the UV-C spectrum.

Blue light (UV-C) is any light with a wavelength between 380-500nm. Today we are exposed to more of this type of light than ever before due to our use of cell phones, tablets, computers, television screens and energy efficient LED light bulbs. Prolonged exposure to this light has been shown to cause change to the macula of the eye which may lead to possible macular degeneration. It has also been shown to suppress the secretion of melatonin in the body which can cause effects on a person’s circadian rhythms and may lead to an increased risk of depression.

These lens and coatings should be considered for anyone who is at risk of excessive exposure to blue light. This will have a soothing, less stress, less fatiguing effect on the eyes.

Computer eye strain: Do your eyes ever feel tired or sore after working on the computer?

Most of us spend a good part of our work day staring at a computer screen and it is only natural that our eyes get tired.  Computer eye strain occurs due to a number of factors.  First of all when focusing on any object at a close distance our eyes must accommodate in order for the object to appear clear.  Accommodation is achieved when the ciliary body changes the form of the elastic lens within our eyes.

Prolonged accommodation causes our eyes to feel tired.  Another major contributor to computer eye strain is dryness.  Studies have shown when we focus on a screen our eyes tend to blink less then normal.  Decreased blinking leads to evaporation of the tear film which normally coats and protects the eyes surface.  Eliminating computer work would certainly fix these issues but for most of us that is not an option.  So instead it can be helpful to take ‘vision breaks’ throughout our work day.  Every 30-60 minutes try to look away from the computer screen and focus your eyes on a distance target or out a window.  This will allow your accommodation to relax and your eyes to blink more naturally. You should also speak with your eye doctor about specialty eyeglasses for the computer. Your eyes will thank you!
