Eyes in the Sun

Exposure to the sun may be damaging to the eyes just as it is to the skin.  The sun emits UV-A and UV-B radiation that is absorbed by the tissues in the front and back of the eye.  This can result in an increased risk of cancers in all the different areas of the eye.  It may also increase the risk of certain types of cataracts and macular degeneration.  Although cataracts may be improved with surgery, macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness as we age.  It is very important to wear good sun protection that covers the eyes well and has adequate UV-A and UV-B protection.  Also most of us remember to wear our sunglasses in the summer, but it is just as important to wear them in the winter when UV radiation may be just as intense.  Finally, remember to continue annual eye exams with your eye doctor to diagnose and monitor any problems that may result.
