Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetic Retinopathy

An annual eye exam is important for everyone, but especially for people with diabetes. Diabetes can severely affect a person’s eyes and vision if the damage goes undetected and untreated. Diabetes affects the back inside surface of the eye called the retina. Diabetes decreases the blood flow to the retinal tissue, which results in an insufficient amount of oxygen to the retinal cells. There may be areas with bleeding, and new blood vessel growth can be damaging. All of these are much easier to treat and have a better prognosis when found and treated early. People with no history of diabetic retinopathy are recommended to have yearly dilated exams, and those with mild retinopathy may be required to have more frequent exams.
