Is online shopping affecting your eyes?

Now that holiday shopping is in full force, online shopping can be good for your wallet but bad for your eyes. Excessive near vision tasks, such as working on a computer, can cause strain on the focusing system of the eyes, causing eye fatigue, blurred vision and headaches. Electronic devices, such as computer monitors, mobile phones and tablets, emit high-frequency UV rays known as blue light. Studies show blue light can irritate the eye, cause damage to the retina, and disrupt sleep cycles.

If you spend time in front of a digital device, your eye doctor can help combat the effects of blue light. Glasses with specially manufactured lens coatings that help block blue light and reduce glare can significantly improve computer vision. With the proper eyewear, you can have healthier, more comfortable eyes. Talk to your eye care professional about how computer glasses can improve and protect your vision. Preventing nearsightedness in children

Preventing Nearsightedness in Children

Peripheral defocus is a hot topic in the prevention of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Peripheral defocus comes from the concept that the entire back surface of the eye is not in focus at any one time for someone to see. Even if the central retina is in focus, the peripheral retina may be under or over corrected. Research is being conducted to see if controlling the peripheral defocus may control myopia and aid in nearsightedness control. Researchers are also trying to detect if hyperopic defocus or myopic defocus may be a marker for future development of myopia. Many studies have been designed to test if altering the peripheral defocus with different types of lenses or contact lenses may have an impact on peripheral defocus and in slowing myopic progression. Previous studies involving single vision lenses, soft contacts and RGPs have shown varied results. In 2013 a study by Berntsen found that progressive lenses caused a superior myopic shift in peripheral defocus and less central myopic progression in children. Further studies have found that soft multifocal contact lenses may also have the ability to slow myopia progression. If further research continues to show a decrease in myopia, progressive lenses, anti-fatigue lenses and soft multifocal contact lenses may be a useful tool in slowing myopia progression in at-risk children.

My eyes are twitching and I’m stressed!

stress and eye twitching

Stress can have many effects on the eye. It can manifest as blurry vision, distorted vision, tunnel vision, tension and headaches. Eye twitching, or blepharospasms, may also be common in times of increased stress. The increased adrenaline released by prolonged anxiety is a common cause. In cases of central serous retinopathy, which is common in individuals of high stress jobs, there is swelling in the central macular area of the retina.  This leads to a sudden onset distortion or blur to the central vision. It may resolve under close observation or may require laser treatment to control the swelling. Lid twitching will commonly resolve with resolution of the stress. In extreme cases, botox may be needed to control the twitching.

Fireworks and Eye Safety

fireworks eye safety eye injury

As the 4th of July approaches, eye safety should be at the top of all fireworks users mind. According to some recent statistics from Prevent Blindness America, injuries to the eye accounted for 16% of fireworks injuries in 2013, with 40% of injuries occurring in children under 15 years of age. These injuries often occur to people who are only watching the fireworks display. Many erroneously believe that sparklers are safe and even give them to their small children. Sparklers accounted for 31% of injuries in children under five. Because sparklers burn at 1200F, they are not a safe firework for children. To prevent eye injuries, it is best to avoid fireworks altogether, and at a minimum wear safety glasses. If an injury does occur, medical treatment should be sought immediately.

Many children have anisometropia. What is it?

childhood anisometropia

Anisometropia. This unusual word refers to a common visual condition. Anisometropia is where the prescription of each eye is different. A small difference is very common and has no symptoms, but a large difference in the prescriptions has noticeable symptoms. These symptoms may include double vision, headaches and visual discomfort. In very young children, anisometropia frequently causes amblyopia, or lazy eye. In the developing child, there is a failure to use the eye with the greater  prescription, as it becomes “lazy” or amblyopic. It is critical to detect and treat this condition as early as possible. At Rinkov Eyecare Centers, we encourage all children have regular vision exams beginning at age four.

Advantages of daily disposable contact lenses

Daily Disposable Contact Lenses

Daily disposable contacts are becoming increasingly popular because they are one of the healthiest options available to patients—and one of the most comfortable.

Healthier Eyes

Frequently replacing your daily contact lenses reduces the amount of time they spend in contact solution and reduces the chance of contamination from an old dirty contact lens case. This has been shown to reduce the rate of eye infections compared to other types of contacts.

Increased Comfort

It’s also more comfortable to start with clean contact lenses everyday. This is especially important with allergy sufferers, whose eyes tend to deposit more proteins and can be more reactive to allergens that remain with longer wear contacts.

Fortunately contact lens companies have been able to manufacture the lenses in a cost effective manner to help manage costs and keep increasing options available for daily disposable contact lenses. They’ve also developed a new, cost-effective daily disposable multifocal lens and expanded options with astigmatism patients with a new toric lens.

Call or visit your Rinkov Eyecare Centers location to see if daily disposable contact lenses will work for you!

How to prevent an eye disease

Rinkov Eyecare Centers 20-Point Eye Exam

Many people only go to the eye doctor when they are having trouble with their eye sight. While this is a valid reason to see the eye doctor, everyone should have an annual eye exam whether they are seeing well or not. Many medical conditions of the eye are painless or have no symptoms until irreversible harm has occurred to the eye. Glaucoma is a painless condition that slowly damages the optic nerve, the nerve that connects the eye to the brain, until blindness results. Retinal holes and tears can often have no symptoms but can easily progress to retinal detachment which can cause blindness. Tumors of the retina can be both vision threatening and life threatening, but they will often have no symptoms until too late. All of these conditions can be detected in a routine eye exam and can be treated before they result in permanent vision loss.

If you haven’t yet done so, schedule your 2014 eye exam today! You can contact one of our seven locations or request an appointment online.
