Safety glasses and tool time: Prevent power tool eye injuries

safety glasses prevent power tool eye injury

Although warnings are often written all over power tools, it can never be stated too often how important it is to wear safety glasses while using them. It is all too common to see injuries in the eye doctor’s office from power tool accidents. We often find metallic foreign bodies in the cornea as a result of cutting or grinding metal without safety glasses. If pieces of metal or wood penetrate the eye, the eye can be lost. If they are just embedded in the cornea, they can be removed at the eye doctor’s office. However, they most often scar and can permanently affect vision.

Fireworks and Eye Safety

fireworks eye safety eye injury

As the 4th of July approaches, eye safety should be at the top of all fireworks users mind. According to some recent statistics from Prevent Blindness America, injuries to the eye accounted for 16% of fireworks injuries in 2013, with 40% of injuries occurring in children under 15 years of age. These injuries often occur to people who are only watching the fireworks display. Many erroneously believe that sparklers are safe and even give them to their small children. Sparklers accounted for 31% of injuries in children under five. Because sparklers burn at 1200F, they are not a safe firework for children. To prevent eye injuries, it is best to avoid fireworks altogether, and at a minimum wear safety glasses. If an injury does occur, medical treatment should be sought immediately.

Eye pain and watering upon awakening

Eye Pain Upon Awakening

Some people experience episodes of eye pain and watering upon awakening in the middle of the night or morning. One thing that can cause this is a condition called recurrent corneal erosions. Usually the patient has previously had an initial corneal abrasion or scratch, which usually heals without any problems. However, as the scratch is healing, the new surface cells of the cornea can take a few months to completely adhere to the cell layers below them. During the night, the eye dries out and the under side of the eyelid will stick to the new cells. When the eye is opened upon waking, the eyelid then rips off these new fresh corneal cells and reopens the abrasion, causing the symptoms of pain and watering. After seeking medical treatment, your eye doctor may recommend an over-the-counter artificial tear ointment before going to bed. This ointment will prevent the eye from drying out and the lid from adhering to the new corneal cells. This ointment should be used every night for a few months after any corneal abrasion.

If you’re experiencing similar eye pain and watering upon awakening, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor immediately. Contact Rinkov Eyecare Centers today or request an appointment online. We’re here to help.

Warning: Beware of costume contact lenses

halloween contact lenses

It’s Halloween and many people are tempted to accentuate their costumes with cosmetic contact lenses. With a quick online search, a person can find many websites offering cosmetic contact lenses for sale, and many of them claim that no prescription is needed. This is untrue and unsafe. All contact lenses, whether vision correcting or cosmetic, are labeled as medical devices by the FDA and therefore require a doctor’s prescription. A prescription is required to ensure that the contact lens fits your eye correctly. An improperly fitting contact lens can cause injury and scarring of the cornea, which can result in permanently reduced vision or even blindness. Having “cool” contact lenses to go along with your costume is not worth the risk to your eyes and vision.

If you have any questions or think your contacts have scratched or scarred your eye, please call your closest Rinkov Eyecare Center immediately for attention.

BB guns and airsoft guns: A common cause of blindness

BB gun

Unfortunately there is a very common cause of blindness in children that could be easily prevented. Children report to emergency rooms quite frequently with BB gun injuries to their eyes. A BB will very easily destroy the eye and cause permanent blindness in that eye. This can be prevented  by parental supervision and by wearing protective shooting glasses made from impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses. Another common injury seen in resent times is eye injuries from airsoft guns. People are under the false impression that because airsoft pellets are made of plastic, they are safer. This is not true. The plastic projectile is travelling at such high velocity, that it can easily destroy an eye. Whether playing with a BB gun or an airsoft gun, a person should never point the gun at another person or animal. The shooter should select his or her target carefully, to avoid the projectile from ricocheting back at the shooter or toward others.

Your local Rinkov Eyecare Centers office can almost always accommodate eye emergencies, should you have an eye injury or infection that requires immediate attention. We care about your eye health for life.
