Preventing nearsightedness in children

Preventing Nearsightedness in Children

Peripheral defocus is a hot topic in the prevention of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Peripheral defocus comes from the concept that the entire back surface of the eye is not in focus at any one time for someone to see. Even if the central retina is in focus, the peripheral retina may be under or over corrected. Research is being conducted to see if controlling the peripheral defocus may control myopia and aid in nearsightedness control. Researchers are also trying to detect if hyperopic defocus or myopic defocus may be a marker for future development of myopia. Many studies have been designed to test if altering the peripheral defocus with different types of lenses or contact lenses may have an impact on peripheral defocus and in slowing myopic progression. Previous studies involving single vision lenses, soft contacts and RGPs have shown varied results. In 2013 a study by Berntsen found that progressive lenses caused a superior myopic shift in peripheral defocus and less central myopic progression in children. Further studies have found that soft multifocal contact lenses may also have the ability to slow myopia progression. If further research continues to show a decrease in myopia, progressive lenses, anti-fatigue lenses and soft multifocal contact lenses may be a useful tool in slowing myopia progression in at-risk children.

Back to school contact lenses

Back to school contact lenses

As many children are seeing their eye doctor for their annual eye exams before school starts, many are considering contact lenses in addition to their glasses. Contact lenses have several benefits over glasses.

Better peripheral vision is attained with contact lenses. It is not possible to look out beyond the edge of the lens with contact lenses as it is with glasses. This can be very helpful when playing sports like football and basketball.

Glasses lenses tend to fog when going from cold to warm environments or when the wearer is hot and sweating. This does not happen with contact lenses. Contact lenses also won’t slide down the end of your nose when sweating, like glasses can.

Better vision is attainable with strong prescriptions with contact lenses. Glasses lenses will magnify or minimize the image seen when the prescription is high, while true image size is attained with contact lenses.

While contact lenses may not be for everybody, they do have benefits beyond just cosmetic advantages.

Reduce childhood nearsightedness by 50%

Reduce childhood nearsightedness

A new study that took place over a two year period of time shows promise for reducing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in kids by up to 50%. The technique used involves the fitting of a multifocal contact lens instead of the more traditional single vision lenses. Apparently with traditional contact lenses, the peripheral retinal receives a relative defocused image and sends a signal to the eye not to get longer (axial length). Multifocal contacts helps prevent this. Multifocal contacts, available in popular brands and materials, are well-tolerated by children. Pediatrician or school vision screenings aren’t enough for children’s eye health

children eye exam

The start of the new school year will soon be here, and it’s very important to remember to have your children’s eyes checked by an optometrist.

The vision screener done at the pediatrician’s office or by the school nurse is inadequate and is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. These screenings can miss eye coordination problems and far-sightedness. Uncorrected far-sightedness will cause your child to have to work the focusing muscles of the eyes much harder than somebody without far-sightedness. This can lead to headaches, eye strain, avoidance of reading, and poor grades in school. Uncorrected far-sightedness is often missed in a vision screening done at the pediatrician’s office, but it would be discovered at an eye doctor’s office.

Attention Parents – You can help your kids feel GREAT about their glasses!

In honor of back to school we have some advise for parents and teachers to help kids feel more comfortable about wearing their glasses.  Sometimes parents and teachers will tell us they need help getting kids to wear their new glasses.  This can be the case, especially for older teenagers who are nervous about standing out, but young children are usually excited to wear glasses.   If kids are use to seeing their parents and teachers look good and want to wear their glasses, the kids are usually excited too.  If they have parents at home with old glasses they feel ugly in and don’t want to wear, the children will probably adopt their preferences.  Glasses have come a long way from the old thick, BCG’s of the past.  People can express their fun, cool personalities now with all the fun styles that are available.  We love to hear how cool a child thinks their new glasses are.  How they love the pink and purple fade with the peace signs.  Glasses can differentiate you and that is very cool no matter your age.  A quiet complement on how good someone looks in their new glasses goes a long way.  The child will be one of many wearing glasses, so don’t worry about them standing out, they won’t.  Try not to make a big fuss about them having to wear the glasses and instead focus on how cool they look in them.  It might even work with the teenagers.
