How rheumatoid arthritis can affect your eyes

RA Hands

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which primarily affects the lining of the small joints of the body, may also have significant eye implications. RA is a result of an overreaction to the immune system.  This can lead to many eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, scleritits, iritis and dry eye syndrome.  Some of the conditions are directly caused by the inflammation and can sometimes be worsened by the steroids used to treat the RA.  Many RA complications and symptoms can easily be diagnosed and treated or monitored with a comprehensive eye exam.

Always be proactive with your eye health, especially if you have other ailments. Our 20-Point Eye Exam allows us to catch many eye problems that other eye exams cannot. That means we can detect and treat a problem before it becomes worse. Contact your nearest Rinkov Eyecare Centers location to schedule your annual appointment, or request an appointment online.

Prevent an eye infection from your cat’s litter box

Toxoplasmosis: eye infection from litter box

Many people have pets. If you have a cat, it’s very important to wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning out the litter box. There is a protozoa called toxoplasmosis that can be found in cat feces that can cause infections in the eye. This infection can cause retinal scars, inflammation of the optic nerve, and inflammation in the fluid in the eye. It is difficult to treat, but treatment usually includes antibiotics and steroids. Perhaps even more importantly, pregnant women should avoid cleaning litter boxes entirely, as the protozoa can cross the blood-placenta barrier and cause anything from stillbirth to neurologic birth defects in the baby, depending upon which stage in pregnancy the infection was acquired.

Rinkov Eyecare Centers cares for your health. We can diagnose and treat many eye problems. If you detect an infection, immediately call one of our locations to schedule an appointment. Note that we now have two new locations in Bexley and Nationwide Plaza for your convenience!

Struck by Lightning: How it Affects the Eyes

Struck by Lightning

Lightning injuries are uncommon but require an evaluation by an eye care professional if they occur.  According to the National Lightning Safety Institute in a paper written by Richard Kithi, the lightning strike is thought to cause thermal damage, electrical damage and a contusion from the shock wave.  Cooper et al  (Wilderness Medicine, Auerback P ed., Mosby 1995) found that 55 percent of lightning victims suffer eye effects. Mr. Kithi  also stated that although some of the symptoms may occur early, some may appear years later.  Cataracts are the most common, but lightning may also cause hemorrhages, inflammations, decreased muscle function and decreased color vision.   This emphasizes the need for immediate evaluation, as well as the importance of longer term follow-up care.

Everyone should stay up-to-date on their eye health. Contact us to schedule your annual comprehensive eye exam or request an appointment online.

What is lazy eye?

Lazy eye | Amblyopia

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is a common eye condition found in childhood. Lazy eye can develop anytime when one eye isn’t seeing as well as the other eye. There are three main causes:

  1. When one eye is significantly more far-sighted than the other eye.
  2. When one eye turns in, out, up or down while the fellow eye is looking straight ahead.
  3. When the  vision is blocked  in one eye, either from a congenital cataract or drooping eyelid.

Lazy eye can usually be prevented from becoming permanent if treated in early childhood. Not a lot can be done to improve the vision in the lazy eye after that time. It is very important to have children see an eye doctor when they start grade school (at the latest) to screen for such problems.

We care about your child’s vision. Contact us to schedule a children’s eye exam for your child, or request an appointment online.

How often should you replace eye makeup?

replace eye makeup often

You should replace eye makeup more often than you think!  Eye makeup can be a breeding ground for many varieties of bacteria including staphylococcus, streptococcus, micrococcus and bacillus.  Mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow should be replaced every three months due to the growth of these organisms.

It is also important to practice clean habits while using makeup:

  • Always keep makeup lids tightly closed.
  • Sharpen eye pencils regularly to remove the outer layer, which may contain bacteria.
  • Be sure to store makeup in a cool, dry area.
  • If you experience any symptoms or signs of an eye infection immediately dispose of all eye makeup and refrain from the use of new products until you have been cleared by an eye doctor.

If your eyes are dry, red, swollen or uncomfortable, please contact our offices so we can get you on the path to healthy eyes!
