Watch for the Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis!!

Giant papillary conjunctivitis is a common condition in which large bumps form under an individuals eyelid.  It is an allergic response that is most common in soft contact lenses that have a longer planned replacement time frame.  The residual proteins on the lens incite the allergic reaction, which can lead to irritation and excess movement with contact lens wear.  The prevalence of GPC has decreased since disposable contact lenses have become popular.  In addition to prescribing medications and/or discontinuing contact lens wear an eye doctor may switch someone with mild to moderate GPC to daily disposable contact lenses as a viable option.

Summerlike Weather – Watch those Corneas!

With the summerlike weather we have been having, one need to be diligent in wearing their sunglasses. One particular reason for this is pterygium. This is a growth of tissue that starts covering over the cornea. It is seen
primarily in people who are exposed to high UV levels. If the tissue grows far enough across the cornea, it can block vision and cause blindness. The tissue can be removed surgically, but often scars afterward and can return.
The best treatment is prevention, by blocking UV rays with sunglasses.

Why do my eyelids twitch sometimes?

An involuntary eyelid twitch is most likely what we refer to as a Blepharospasm.  This is a neurological condition involving the contraction of the muscles around the eye.  It normally lasts only a few seconds and often affects just one eye.  The condition is usually brought on by increased stress to the body.  It may happen more often while someone is overly tired or stressed due to a situation in  here everyday life.  Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done with medication or treatment to stop the twitching.  For most  people the best advised is to try to get more sleep and do whatever possible to reduce their daily stress.  Normally the condition will resolve on it’s own within a few days time.  If the condition is persistent and severe enough to interfere with patient’s daily activities, Botox injections have been used to temporally paralyze the muscle.

Bloody Red Eyes!

Many people come into their optometrist’s office in a panic because they have a blood red eye. This is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage (SCH).

This is similar to a bruise elsewhere on the body, but because the conjunctiva overlying the blood is clear, it looks bloody. This condition is usually no more harmful than a bruise and will resolve uneventfully with time. They are caused by trauma to the eye, anything that affects blood clotting, such as use of blood thinners, and straining, such as with lifting, vomiting, pushing during childbirth, and straining using the restroom.
