Importance of a Valid Contact Lens Prescription

Many people have found they can find plano colored contacts in different places without a valid prescription.  Just like the circle contacts, these contacts have not been fitted to the person’s eyes and may lead to corneal abrasions, various types of infections and potentially blindness.  The circle contact lenses are not approved for sale in the U.S., but colored contacts in various prescriptions and even in no prescription can be obtained safely and monitored safely by your eye care professional.   The next time you are interested in changing your eye color or trying something new, please call your eye doctor first.  Your eyes will thank you for it.

Meibomitis

This is an inflammation of the meibomian glands which often causes the glands to be obstructed. The glands can also be infected by bacterial.. This is usually characterized by dry, burning eyes, or redness along the lid margins ( blepharitis ). Warm compresses may help reduce this problem. However, often prescription medication prescribed by your eye care professional is used to treat this.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is an irreversible corneal degeneration. Symptoms include blurred vision , even with glasses or contacts, glare, halos,.and someone double vision with one eye only. Your eyecare professional can accurate measure the curvature of your corneas by a corneal topographer. The cornea loses its normal shape and becomes like a cone. It is usually bilateral and progressive. Due to the irregular shape of the cornea, your eye doctor’s initial choice to help the patient see better is a special shaped gas permeable lens which vaults the cone shape of the eye. If the cornea continues to thin, surgical intervention by an ophthalmologist is required. The newest method of surgery is DALK. There are ongoing studies about cornea cross linking to improve the Keratoconus cornea.
